01 / CONTEXT
First, separate Van Gogh Pikachu from the five Munch promos
Two art collaborations are frequently grouped under “Pokémon museum cards.” The 2023 Pokémon × Van Gogh Museum project produced the English Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat. Five years earlier, the Japanese “Munch: A Retrospective” campaign produced five SM-P promos styled after The Scream.
The fast identifier is language and numbering: Grey Felt Hat is English SVP EN 085; the Munch cards are Japanese 286–290/SM-P.
02 / COMPLETE LINE-UP
All six cards: number, year, language and illustrator
| Collaboration | Card | Number | Year / language | Illustrator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Van Gogh Museum | Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat | SVP EN 085 | 2023 / English | Naoyo Kimura |
| Munch “The Scream” | Psyduck / コダック | 286/SM-P | 2018 / Japanese | Tomokazu Komiya |
| Munch “The Scream” | Eevee / イーブイ | 287/SM-P | 2018 / Japanese | Atsuko Nishida |
| Munch “The Scream” | Pikachu / ピカチュウ | 288/SM-P | 2018 / Japanese | You Iribi |
| Munch “The Scream” | Mimikyu / ミミッキュ | 289/SM-P | 2018 / Japanese | Hasuno |
| Munch “The Scream” | Rowlet / モクロー | 290/SM-P | 2018 / Japanese | Hideki Ishikawa |

03 / THE FIVE MUNCH PROMOS
All five Munch “The Scream” promos
The cards accompanied the Munch retrospective held in Tokyo from October 2018 to January 2019. Each uses the bridge, rolling sky and hands-to-face expression associated with The Scream. Arranging them from 286 to 290 makes it easier to compare the visual links and five distinct illustrators.
Psyduck / コダック | 286/SM-P
Tomokazu Komiya’s agitated linework fits Psyduck’s familiar headache and confusion. It begins the five-card numbered run.
Eevee / イーブイ | 287/SM-P
Atsuko Nishida keeps Eevee’s rounded silhouette while the twisted sky and bridge create the tension. Use 287/SM-P to separate it from other Eevee promos.
Pikachu / ピカチュウ | 288/SM-P
You Iribi’s “Scream Pikachu” became the best-known image of the release. It was a museum-visitor promo and is not the same card as the 2023 Grey Felt Hat Pikachu.
Mimikyu / ミミッキュ | 289/SM-P
Hasuno places Mimikyu’s cloth silhouette inside the darkest composition. Its original release was sealed with a designated mini card file rather than pulled from a booster.
Rowlet / モクロー | 290/SM-P
Hideki Ishikawa closes the numbered sequence. Rowlet’s circular form contrasts with the long bridge, making the final card easy to recognise in a full lineup.
04 / ORIGINAL DISTRIBUTION
Why supply differs: three original distribution routes
“Munch promo” describes the theme, not a single giveaway. The five cards were handled through three routes, a distinction that resale descriptions often compress.
| Card | Original 2018 distribution |
|---|---|
| Psyduck 286 | Choose one of Psyduck, Eevee or Rowlet with a two-booster-pack purchase at participating Japanese stores. |
| Eevee 287 | Part of the same in-store, two-pack, choose-one-of-three promotion. |
| Pikachu 288 | A visitor giveaway at the Munch exhibition. Published sources differ on the exact window, so this guide does not present one disputed date as certain. |
| Mimikyu 289 | Sealed inside the “Scream” mini card file sold through designated museum-shop and Pokémon Center Online channels. |
| Rowlet 290 | Part of the same in-store, two-pack, choose-one-of-three promotion. |
05 / VAN GOGH MUSEUM
Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat | SVP EN 085
Pokémon and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum collaborated in 2023 around the 170th anniversary of Van Gogh’s birth and the museum’s 50th anniversary. Naoyo Kimura’s illustration references the 1887 Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat. The result is an English Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promo.
- Official number: SVP EN 085.
- English text, Pika-Portrait attack and G regulation mark.
- Museum, Pokémon Center and later Dutch retail distribution still refer to the same card number; a channel story alone does not make a separate official version.

06 / CHECK BEFORE COLLECTING
Check number and language before the provenance story
High-demand art collaborations attract incorrect names, invented variants and counterfeit risk. Compare card number, typography, illustrator credit, back colour, surface response and dimensions with official high-resolution images, then inspect whitening, corners, dents, scratches and centring.
A sealed card file, event wrapper or receipt can support provenance, but none replaces inspection of the card. Keep raw cards, graded examples, completed sales and unsold asking prices in separate comparison groups.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many Munch Pokémon promo cards are there?
Five: Psyduck 286, Eevee 287, Pikachu 288, Mimikyu 289 and Rowlet 290/SM-P.
Are the Munch cards and Van Gogh Pikachu one set?
No. The Munch cards are Japanese SM-P promos from 2018; Grey Felt Hat Pikachu is the 2023 English SVP EN 085.
Were the five Munch cards printed in English?
No official English printings exist. Conversely, Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat has no official Japanese printing.
Why is Mimikyu 289 described with a sealed card file?
Its original release was enclosed with a designated mini card file. A loose copy has been removed from that packaging, so the two conditions should be described separately.
How Cardstop built this guide
Identity, official facts and dated market context are handled separately; one listing never becomes a guaranteed value.

METHOD / SOURCES
Sources & methodology
Cardstop Editorial used the official Pokémon Card Game database to verify the five Munch promo numbers, names and illustrators, and Pokémon’s official Van Gogh Museum announcement for the Grey Felt Hat collaboration. Distribution notes were cross-checked against sourced event records; the disputed Pikachu 288 date is deliberately not treated as one certain answer.
